2004, 6:00 p.m., "The Freedom of Limits" The Freedom of Limits Allan Shedlin’s The Freedom of Limits is the first in a six-part Parenting Clashpoints series, which provides practical guidance to parents, grandparents, community organizations, and others who interact with kids of all ages. Each topic presented in the Parenting Clashpoints series was identified in Shedlin’s interviews with hundreds of children (5-21 years-old) in three countries, and confirmed by scores of parents, grandparents, and professionals/experts. The central idea in The Freedom of Limits, is that “The goal of establishing boundaries is not to control children, but to help children learn to control themselves.” Shedlin believes that setting and testing limits is a particularly important issue during these uncertain and threatening times, marked by blurred boundaries between right and wrong, and when parents want their limited time with their kids to be as stress-free as possible. During such moments, it is especially important for limits within the family to be clear and consistent in order to provide a sense of security and safety. Shedlin’s career as an educator, child and family consultant and activist, national and state policy consultant, and parent and grandparent, spans four decades. Former executive director of the National Elementary School Center, he is now President & CEO of DADS Unlimited LLC (www.daddying.com), a suburban Maryland-based organization dedicated to demystifying parenting and developing a comprehensive range of practical services and resources that support parents, including Parenting Consulting and School-Home Liaison support services. Through his frequent broadcast interviews and writing, he has steadily established a broad national platform as an authority on parenting education and child-focused public policy. Following the presentation there will be ample time for audience Q & A. The Freedom of Limits, Mr. Shedlin’s new booklet, the first in a six-part Parenting Clashpoints series, will be available. A percentage of the $8.95 cost of the booklet will be donated to the host organization.
